MEXICO CITY TRAVEL GUIDE

I’ve compiled a list of my favourite restaurants, cafes, and shops in Mexico City. There’s so much to see in Mexico City, but these are my top recommendations if you’re there for a week or even planning a shorter trip. Hope you enjoy!

RESTAURANTS:

MAXIMO

If you have limited time in Mexico City, this restaurant is a must visit. This is truly one of the most beautiful restaurants I have ever been to. Not only was the food spectacular, but the interior design of the building and the attention to detail with plates and glasses really made a lasting impression. We went for lunch, but I think the place is perfect for any occasion.

ENTREMAR

Located in Polanco, Entremar is a Seafood restaurant with simple yet incredibly delicious recipes. The old-fashioned aesthetic perfectly complements its food. I recommend asking for a table on the top floor next to the terrace (for this I would book ahead), and definitely order the Pescado Contramar. If you can’t get a table at Contramar, this is basically exactly the same.

HUGO

A small, cosy wine bar specialising in skin contact wines, but the real showstopper was the food. The menu is designed with small plates meant for sharing, and I promise you won’t be disappointed. We went on a Tuesday night, and it wasn’t too packed, but probably best to book ahead.

SARDE

Another must try in Mexico City. It’s the perfect dinner spot, with dim lighting and some of the best seafood you’ll ever try. The cocktails were incredible too and also aren’t strict with ‘out’ times (we got a table for 7pm and stayed until 11pm) I do recommend booking ahead!

LA DOCENA (Roma)

A really nice lunch spot with fresh seafood and a nice crowd. It’s packed any time of day but walk ins are always welcome.

WABI SUSHI

You might miss this small restaurant by walking by but Wabi sushi is quite the gem, especially if you want something other than Mexican food for a change.

CAFES:

PANADERIA ROSETTA (Roma Norte)

A Mexico City staple. You can’t go wrong with any pastry, and the coffee is good too. I recommend going super early (especially if you are jetlagged) because by 8:30/9am it’s already packed with people.

CAFÉ NIN

Delicious baked goods and great for lunch too. Cafe Nin is particularly worth visiting for the building and its outdoor area, which is surrounded by lush greenery.

SAINT

Located in La Condesa, this is the bakery from heaven, and a really nice place to enjoy your meal outdoors.

TACOS:

TACOS LA CHULA

Easy-going, no fuss tacos and the décor is iconic. It’s great to visit any time of day.

LOS CUCUYOS

It’s a bit out of the way, but I recommend this place if you are planning a trip around Centro Historico.

 Cariñito Tacos

Some of my favourite tacos I had on the trip. It’s a super casual spot with only a few outdoor high tables. They combine Southeast Asian flavours with traditional Mexican style tacos. The handmade tortillas were also amazing.

SHOPS:

Apapacho World (Centro): Hand crafted pottery from Puebla, Mexico

Metate (Roma Norte): Homeware shop

VARON studio (Condesa):  https://varonofficial.com

Bomboti (Polanco): Very high prices but the shop is beautiful

Perla Valtierra (Juarez): You’ll have to email them beforehand to make sure they are open, but the location of the store is worth the visit

Xinu Perfumes (Juarez): Worth the visit just to see the shop

DO:

-Go for an early morning walk around Plaza Rio de Janeiro/ Stop by Casa Bosques, a beautiful bookstore in the heart of Roma Norte.

-Visit Mercado Ciudadela (Centro), it’s perfect for gifts and homeware.

-Walk around La Condesa area passing by Parque España and Parque Mexico, pass by MAQUE or ODETTE for a coffee and pastry/ Tacos Hola El Guero for a quick lunch.

-Walk around Juarez and stop by Café NIN/ lunch at Tacos La Chula.
